A Small Size National Bank Note Forbidden Title Set requiring 22 notes. In 1926, Congress prohibited the use of certain words (i.e., United States, Federal, and Reserve) in National Bank Note titles so the public would not confuse them with banks operated directly by the Federal Government. Any National Banks already using these "Forbidden Titles" prior to 1926 were grandfathered.
