2018 AWARDS 2016 WINNERS

Expert comments:

Once again we have the great pleasure of recognizing the accomplishments of the PCGS Currency Set Registry participants. Every year for the past 10 years we have selected the best sets to win major awards in the PCGS Currency Set Registry. And, during this process, the Registry has become a place to admire collections, both large and small, belonging to collectors all over the world. These collections, current and retired, tell the story of people’s love of their hobby, their dedication, passion, and determination to own the very best.

It is our pleasure to present the 2017 PCGS Currency Set Registry category award winners.
As always, it is an honor and a privilege to review your sets this year and every year. Our congratulations not just to this year’s winners, but to all the PCGS Currency Set Registry participants.

Laura A. Kessler
Vice President, PCGS Currency

Best Collection of 2017

"Mac"

This award is the most prestigious annual honor that a participant in the PCGS Currency Set Registry can achieve. Many sets deserve individual attention because of their specific merits within each category. A few collectors, however, are notable in the breadth of their participation. Competing successfully in one or two categories is, on its own merits, a worthy endeavor. Competing in multiple sets across different categories—and doing so while maintaining top honors in many of them—is on an entirely higher plane. This collector was a long-time collector who took some time off for a decade or two, only to return with a focused effort—assisted by the PCGS Currency Set Registry—to build and obtain the finest possible Small Size U.S. currency collection possible. His many sets include Legal Tender Notes, Silver Certificates, and Gold Certificates, and his strongest entries lead many sets in these categories. Each year, as we decide the category awards based on merit within each of the specialties, when the same name keeps coming up as a set participant who demonstrates leadership in multiple categories and is nominated for different awards, it becomes evident that this collector deserves notice for his overall efforts as well. In set after set, this collector either leads in first place, or is competitively trailing the leader, and does so in nearly every set in which he competes. It is for the remarkable achievement of successfully competing and challenging in so many different sets, and in the demonstration of determination and the spirit in which he competes, that “Mac” is given the 2017 “Best Collection of 2017” award for the PCGS Currency Set Registry. “Mac,” it is with the heartiest congratulations that we extend our highest honor of “Best Collection” to you, and desire only the best of continued success in your determined competitiveness in the upcoming year!

Best New Set of 2017

Larry Thomas "Larry510"

$1-$100 Legal Tender Series Set 1928-1966A

This award was a rather easy one for our judges to decide upon, because the impressive way in which this set made a splash in the Set Registry during the past year. Although a recent new entry, Mr. Thomas has already completed his set with all 29 of the different notes needed for this “Red Seal” series collection. The weighted GPA of 68.68 falls just a little short of the maximum theoretically possible score of 70.07, however Mr. Thomas includes several notes in his “Best New Set” award-winning entry that do qualify as “top pop” as tied or alone for the single finest PCGS Currency-graded example for their issue. We met Larry at a Long Beach show several years ago, and were immediately struck by his impressive desire to learn—both about grading, and about collecting in general. Larry exudes enthusiasm for the hobby, and we can only hope that more and more collectors follow his lead in participating in the PCGS Set Registry with such zeal, thirst for knowledge, and passion, as he demonstrates every day. We extend hearty congratulations to Mr. Thomas for this “Best New Set” award, and wish him the best of success as he continues to upgrade and complete this and other sets during the coming year.

Best Large Size Currency Set of 2017

Mike Pierce "Cape Cod Currency"

$5 Federal Reserve Notes 1914 District Set

The winner of this year’s best Large Size Currency set best described his award-winning entry in an email he sent us after being notified of his award, some of which appears as follows: “Thank you very much for nominating my 1914 FRN district set for the best large size set.The 1914 FRN is one of my favorite sets. Some of the notes I have were acquired when I first started collecting currency in the late 1970s. I'm always looking for new notes in this series and upgrades for the notes I have. It wasn't until the advent of the PCGS Currency Set Registry that I organized and focused on this collection.” That sums up what the Set Registry is all about, and we couldn’t have better said it ourselves. The statistics are mere afterthought, but they show why our judges unanimously chose Mr. Pierce’s entry for the category award: 100% completion; a weighted GPA of 67.14 (out of a highest possible 68.50); and most of the notes qualifying for “top pop” honors at the zenith of the census of notes graded by PCGS Currency to date for each district bank. Congratulations, Mike, and we wish you the best of success in continuing to build your collection and utilize the PCGS Currency Set Registry program to assist you in your endeavors!

Best Small Size Currency Set of 2017

Ron Foley "cccurrency"
$1 Small Size Design Set

Mr. Foley has won many past awards in the PCGS Currency Set Registry competition, and returns in 2017 with a magnificent collection which he has upgraded during the past year. This 12 note set is simple in its design, but Ron has gone above and beyond by obtaining only the best available notes possible. With a weighted GPA of 70.22, this set falls just shy of the theoretical top possible rating of 70.60. Nine of the 12 notes present stands at the top of the PCGS Currency population report for their entire design type. Every single note grades either 68PPQ or 69PPQ. It’s simply an incredible collection, with every note near-perfection in its appearance and technical merit. We congratulate Mr. Foley on yet another hard-earned award for top set in this category.

Best Small Size Modern Currency Set of 2017

Bruce Threatte “jbrucet”

2009 $1 Federal Reserve Note Block Set AA-L*

Any collection of any kind of paper money with these kind of statistics is worthy of attention: 100% completion with 120 of 120 notes for the set; a weighted grade point average of 68.32 out of a highest possible rating of 69.87; and an incredible 95 of the 120 notes present—almost 80%— registering as “top pop” as either tied or alone as the finest example graded to date by PCGS Currency. The fact that this collection is made up entirely of different serial number blocks of series 2009 Federal Reserve Notes is actually even more impressive. Mr. Threatte has completed this set in incredible fashion, not only obtaining each note but doing so in the highest grade possible in most cases. The amount of time and dedication necessary to complete this set is staggering. But then one realizes that Mr. Threatte is in the process of building collections for many different series, and continues to compete in other sets as well. We wish him the best of success as he searches for notes that fit the bill as the best of the best, and congratulate him on top category award honors for this year!

Best National Bank Note Set of 2017

Godot

Large Size 51-Note National Bank Note State Set

While Godot remains a man without any real competition in this category, we took the opportunity this year to award him top honors for a set that is one of our favorites because of which notes he has chosen to enter in each spot necessary for completion. A 51-note set of Large Size Nationals isn’t particularly impossible, and in fact it can easily be done—although at a price, as there are a few high value notes that must be obtained to achieve a complete collection. What is most impressive about his entry is that he didn’t just choose the most common high grade pieces available for each state. Instead, his 51-note Large Size set of Nationals from each state and the District of Columbia is a veritable showcase of “trophy notes” from across the country. There are First Charters, Brown Backs, Red Seals, and notes that are unique for bank or even town. If any collector of National Bank Notes can scroll through this 51-note masterpiece without being duly impress, we would question both their knowledge and their sanity. We encourage anyone who has an interest in Nationals to visit the Set Registry web page and scroll though Godot's different sets, most of which have plenty of photos. It’s worth the time spent, if for nothing else than to admire…and maybe be just a bit envious. Congratulations, sir, and continue the fantastic work!

Best Fractional Currency Set 2017

Steve ShupeLos Gatos Collection
Fractional Currency Complete Basic Set

A complete “basic” collection of U.S. Fractional Currency by Friedberg number, without minor varieties, consists of 127 notes. It is a lifelong pursuit of many collectors to obtain each of these notes, and many specialists spend decades searching for just the right notes to add to their collection. It’s a difficult task to complete this set at any grade level, and so this first-time winning set is notable for its focus on eye appeal. It is to date nearly 90% complete, with an impressive weighted GPA of 55.32. There aren’t many “top pop” notes, although it would be unfair to overlook those that are present—the Fr. 1334 and 1337 in Superb Gem New 67PPQ are simply unbelievable notes and are both population 1 with none finer in the PCGS Currency population report. But across the board, Mr. Shupe represents each Fr. number with desirable notes no matter what the assigned grade might be. Collecting isn’t always about numeric grades, although that’s obviously an important part of the Set Registry competition. But we are also collectors, and so it’s always nice to take time and admire notes in a collection for their aesthetic beauty. It’s said to “buy the note and not the holder;” we would add the corollary that the holder often does not tell the whole story. Mr. Shupe has assembled an outstanding collection; we congratulate him on his success and his category award as the Best Fractional Currency Set of 2017, and we look forward to him continuing to upgrade and find new notes to add towards the completion of his set!!

Best Military Certificate Set of 2017

Jeff Smith "Stars & Stripes Collection"
Military Payment Certificates Complete Set

Mr. Smith returns to the top award in this category in 2017. Jeff’s complete collection of MPCs is a six-time award winning set, and was entered into our Hall of Fame back in 2012. Little did we know that Jeff would continue the task of upgrading his collection, and in such determined fashion. The statistics speak for themselves: a weighted GPA of 67.55 out of a highest possible 68.29; 74 of the 102 notes present are “top pop” as either tied or alone at the top of the PCGS Currency population report for their issue; and 18 of these are the single finest known examples with populations of 1 and none finer. Mr. Smith found a few upgrades in the past year, getting his set closer and closer to theoretical perfection. He demonstrates the mentality of the dedicated Set Registry collector, even after winning the award for best set in his category year after year, continuing to surpass the competition by searching far and wide for those ever-elusive upgrades. Congratulations, Jeff, both for another category award and for your dedication and leadership in the hobby.

Best Confederate Currency Set of 2017

Pierre Fricke
"David Hogan Collection - Fricke"
72 Note Confederate States of America Complete Type Set

This collection is a two-time award winner, and is excellent in its near completeness and solid grades across the board. While it takes top honors this year, it should be noted that the collection will soon be broken up and sold at auction. This means that it opens up the entire category to competition for next year! There are several different sets in which a collector may compete, and we look forward to continued excitement in this category. PCGS Currency graders have long noted that true Gem examples of many issues are rare or even non-existent, and we wouldn’t be surprised if a high-grade set of 1864 or 1863 issues in 65 or better would prove to be a very difficult collection to assemble. While we congratulate Mr. Hogan and Mr. Fricke, who together assembled this magnificent collection, we challenge all of the other  C.S.A. collectors out there to get to work and show us what you can do!

Best Large Size Block Set of 2017

Marc Fontes "mfontes"

1923 Fr. 237 - Fr. 239 $1 Silver Certificate Set All Blocks

Mr. Fontes continues to improve his award-winning set, upgrading his complete set along the way to an impressive weighted GPA of 65.92. Completing this 38-note set is not an easy task, especially in high grade. Mr. Fontes is now a four-time winner in this category, although there is competition close behind him. Considering how much persistence and dedication Marc displayed in his assembly of this collection, it’s doubtful anyone will catch him in the very near future. Congratulations once again, Marc, for competing on the very highest level!

Best Small Size Block Set of 2017

Kraig Tripp "SDCSD"

1934-1953B $5 Complete Silver Certificate Set All Blocks

Mr. Tripp is well known for this $5 Silver Certificate collection, and his type set was enshrined in our Hall of Fame in 2011. He has continued to upgrade his collection, even when it’s virtually impossible. His collection of $5 Silver Certificates by serial number block is notable in many respects, including its near completeness (71 of the 75 different notes needed for a complete set) and a weighted GPA of 65.517. Of the four notes missing, PCGS Currency has not graded a single example of two of them, just one note for the third, and only three notes for the fourth. Most impressive is that an incredible 58 of the 71 notes present are “top pop” for their respective issues, the finest known or tied for top honors. And of these 58 notes, 28 of them are population 1 with none finer—a simply unbelievable statistic. Congratulations, Kraig, and continue the fantastic work in upgrading your collections!

Best Modern Block Set of 2017

Dana Wood
1957 $1 Silver Certificate Block Set AA-*D

The concept of the Set Registry for currency allows for fluid movement up (and sometimes down) the rankings. New collectors take up a specialty, accomplished collectors sometimes break up or sell their collections, and “new” notes sometimes appear on the market after either a recent discovery or after being held in a long-term collection. In this case, Mr. Wood broke a long streak by another collector who had held top honors in this particular block set for several years. Mr. Wood also has sets in the other two 1957 series block sets and is first place in one other, but this is his most impressive entry. He achieved 100% completion in a set that requires 31 notes. More impressive is his weighted GPA for this set of 69.69, beating out the second place contestant by .07 points. His success is underscored by the fact that there are five different collectors with overall set ratings within two points of this winning set. It’s obvious that the collectors who are the most successful in the Set Registry program are serious about competing, to beat out so many other determined collectors. Mr. Wood is a prime example of the determined collector, and we congratulate him on both his success and his continued efforts to build and expand his collection!

Best Low Ball Set of 2017

Gary Neal “nealgrtx”
$1 Silver Certificate 1928-1934 Funny Back Low Ball Set

Mr. Neal is a past winner in the “Low Ball” category, a specialty in which he and several other like-minded collectors have brought a level of competition to a high...or, as the case may be, low playing field. For those who might be unfamiliar with the concept of the “Low Ball” set competition, the idea works exactly the same way that the normal sets work—except that instead of competing for the highest grades possible, these collectors search far and wide for the lowest grades possible. This can be a surprisingly difficult challenge, as most low grade notes have been damaged in some form or fashion—and an “apparent” grade works the same way it does in the normal sets, except that it penalizes a note in the opposite direction. Finding a low grade note with no real damage except what might have been caused by honest circulation can be very difficult in many cases. Gary’s complete collection of $1 “Funny Back” Silver Certificates by series is magnificent in its simplicity across the board demonstration of honest-to-goodness circulated notes, including two Good 4s, three Good 6s, and the two keys to the set—the 1928D and 1928E—in problem free VG 8. As any serious collector knows, finding any of the three scarcer series in this set (the 1928C, 1928D, and 1928E) is much easier if one is searching for a high grade note, rather than a problem-free low grade note. Gary has put together a truly “rare” collection, and his set of miserable “Funny Backs” shines above all the rest this year

Best Exonumia Set of 2017

Melissa Jones
"Tinker-Bills"
$10 Disney Dollar Series Set

Ms. Jones is a multi-year past winner in this category for her Disney Dollars. This year, instead of the top award going to her complete series set of all Disney Dollar denominations, our judges decided to highlight one particular denomination on which she has worked particularly hard to upgrade. Of the 45 notes needed for this set, Melissa’s top registered set includes all 45 and her weighted average GPA is an astounding 69.377. Of the 45 notes, a remarkable 39 of them are “top pop” examples. This is an incredible statistic, given the popularity that these wonderful collectibles enjoy! Ms. Jones continues to dominate the Disney Dollar category in nearly all of the available sets, although the competition continues to be closer and closer every year. She has worked hard to continue to upgrade her sets across the board, and it’s easy to reward such devotion to her passionate pursuit of the best possible Disney Dollar collection! !

Best Showcase Collection of 2017

Dave Undis
"Cool Serial Numbers"
Top Pop Notes - with fancy serial numbers to boot!

While the functionality and programming involved in the Set Registry does not currently allow for us to easily add special serial numbers as an attribute that can be weighted or defined in any set, collecting “fancy” serial numbers is, and has long been, a popular pursuit in our hobby. Mr. Undis uses the Showcase category in the Set Registry to display different groupings of these special serial numbered notes, and this particular set is an example of why we created the ability for collectors to create their own sets based on their own particular collecting goals. This set contains 17 notes, including solid serial numbers, near-solids, “radars,” and binary serials (containing only two different digits). Remarkably, each of the 17 notes is also a “top pop” – the highest graded note for its series or district. Let that fact sink in for a moment—each note is the finest note known of its type, but also has a fancy serial number! It’s an impressive combination that, by definition, makes each note a rarity in and of itself. This “cool serial numbers” set is indeed “cool,” and it takes top honors in the Showcase Set category for 2017.

Collector's Choice Award of 2017

Robert Calderman "TookyBandit"

$20 Federal Reserve Notes 1928 District Set

This is one of our favorite awards to present. Every
year we struggle while trying to determine the winners in the individual Set Registry categories. We are overwhelmed and impressed with each individual set as we watch them grow and improve. While no one can deny that each winner chosen is deserving of winning, this award is extra special because it is chosen by you- fellow collectors.

We ask collectors to cast their votes for their favorite set- one that they feel is worthy of recognition, and this year you didn't let us down. The 2017 Collector's Choice Award was announced live at the 2017 Set Registry Award's dinner and was presented to Robert Calderman for his $20 Federal Reserve Notes 1928 District Set. We couldn't have agreed more with your choice and we are thrilled for Robert! A well deserved victory and we look forward to watching his sets continue to improve and grow.

PCGS Currency 2017 Appreciation Award

This award is seen by many as the TOP award. It  is given to one collector or dealer every year who has gone above and beyond in every  to promote our hobby. This year, we couldn't think of a more deserving person.

Sir, in appreciation for your commitment, contagious enthusiasm, devotion, and passion for the currency hobby, we bow down to you and say THANK YOU!
